Digital video in surgery

MAGIA System is the non-commercial name of a high tech software system for the surgical environment.

Video aquisition

The system is able to record and archive both endoscopical and open surgical operations in perfect video quality and in real time.
Standard and widespread compression formats such as MPEG-2 or H.264 are used, through professional real-time video encoding hardware.

Several movies has successfully been recorded in general surgery, gynaecology, orthopaedy, urology, neurosurgery, gastroenterology, ophtalmology.

Optionally a streaming server can be attached to the encoding process for video training purposes.

Tablet PCs and different platforms

The user interface gracefully integrates with Tablet PC's pen and the related drawing and handwriting recognition capabilities, as well as with touch-screen devices with on-screen keyboards. Voice control is in a good stage of completeness.

UI therefore allows users to fill up forms with a pen, by dictation or traditional keyboards, draw jots inside the forms.

Data security

Working with sensitive data should imply (even if it unfortunately don't always do yet) a very strong data protection and security. For this purpose a big attention has been paid to secure communications, data criptography on each stage, domain-wide user access restriction and logging, some times with biometrical recognition systems, and D.R.M. of videos.

User interface

the software has different binary cores talking to the user through a higly interactive graphical, xml based UI, which involves the possibility to have different installations of the same system with different skins, handling of different data a different way, and a very fast update/maintainance system.

Current status

As from 2007 the software is ready for installations and maintainance in small, medium units. Future development is planned on request basis.

GPL release

Since software is often requested to migrate to open-source platforms in government, healtcare, NGOs, this system - which already has been built with open source in mind - is in a refactoring progress to a full migration.

Funds, human resources, time and motivation are searched for, in order to complete a new GPL compliant edition and start a new form of business with open source healtcare softwares.
